History
In 1952 Eldon Steffen started to work on a part-time basis with Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. Later in the year he decided he liked the work and started as a full-time agent. He qualified for the Million Dollar Round Table in his first full-time year and each of the next three years to become a Life Member. To serve his clients better, he gradually moved into the general insurance field and eventually received his Securities License enabling him to sell Mutual funds making him a full service agent. He worked from an office located in his home in Cissna Park, Illinois.
In 1988 Eldon hired his nephew, Rod Steffen, who after graduating from the University of Illinois, had become a licensed agent with a CFP (Certified Financial Planner) designation.
January 1, 1994 Eldon sold the agency to Rod Steffen and Greg Steffen, Eldon's youngest son. Greg had just graduated from Illinois State University, where he majored in Business Finance and minored in Insurance. He had previously served in the U.S. Army including a tour of duty in Korea.
The business was renamed The Steffen Agency, Ltd.
In 1995 The Steffen Agency, Ltd. moved out of the office located in Eldon's home to 133 West Garfield Avenue in Cissna Park, Illinois.
The Agency has continued to grow with the purchase and consolation of a number of well established agencies in the East Central Illinois area.
In October of 1999 The Steffen Agency, Ltd. purchased the Lee Agency located in Paxton, Illinois.
In January of 2001 The Steffen Agency, Ltd. purchased the insurance business owned by the Busey Bank in LeRoy, Illinois. This included offices in LeRoy, Melvin, and Saybrook.
In March of 2003 The Steffen Agency, Ltd. consolidated the Melvin and Saybrook offices and opened a new office in Gibson City, Illinois.
In October of 2004 The Steffen Agency, Ltd. purchased the Mitchell Insurance Agency and moved the Gibson City office to its current location.
In December of 2007 The Steffen Agency, Ltd. purchased the Lyle Carstens Insurance Agency in Peotone, Illinois.
In February of 2008 the Thoma Insurance Group, a division of The Steffen Agency, Ltd., opened a new facility on the east side of Bloomington.
In December 2009 The Steffen Agency, Ltd. purchased the Metz Stoller, Inc agency in Fairbury/Forrest Illinois.
On January 1st of 2010, we became Compass Insurance Partners.
We currently have a team of over 32 professionals located in 8 communities who are licensed and trained to address most insurance needs. Many of our team members have continued their educational experience and have acquired advanced insurance credentials. A number of our team members have also chosen to specialize in certain areas of insurance which enhances our ability to work with advanced insurance coverage needs.
